The Classroom - In my studio/shop

In 2004,  I began offering woodturners the opportunity to spend three (3) days with me in my studio/shop in Post Falls, Idaho, where I could share the skills and techniques for making segmented and polychromatic turnings, as I know and use them. It was successful, and I am continuing to do this in 2006, but with a slight change in how classes are scheduled.

This year I will be also offering classes in Finishing Turned Wood, Bowl Turning, and General Woodturning Techniques. The techniques class will be taylored to the wants and needs of the student.

Attendance will be limited to no more than three (3) for each session. There will be no exceptions. Two (2) is an ideal class size, and I will still hold the scheduled class if there is only one (1) person.

"The Segmented Bowl"
This 11" bowl will be the project for this class.  All of the steps from buying lumber through turning and finishing will be done in the class.

We will learn how to design and make this and other basic patterns, and some of those from our imagination.  All design and layout will be done by graphical methods. This  will give a better understanding of why and how things are done.

We will also be making at least one of these, or similar bowls with a more complex feature.
The "Polychromatic" Plate
The Location and Accomodations
Post Falls, Idaho is located on Interstate I-90, 5-miles west of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and 25-miles East from Spokane, Washington. There is a Comfort Inn motel within a mile, and many more less expensive options within 5-miles of my shop.  If you are traveling via RV, there is an excellent RV park is within walking distance, and a WalMart that is even closer.  If you want to sleep in the shop, that can also be arranged. I have been asked about tent camping; I don't have space for that here so I will have to investigate that one.

Plan on a couple days to visit the sights on North Idaho. I can recommend several short sight-seeing trips.
The Classes.......
Please send me a E-mail and we will determine an appropriate 3-days for your class. I will then post that date here, so that others might have an opportunity to attend the same class with you.
This 12-13" platter will be the topic of the class.

We will do all of the steps required in its assembly, turning, and finishing. The emphasis will be on layout, setting up and using the bandsaw, and gluing techniques.

We will also explore other patterns and styles.

COST
The cost will be $300.00 for the "Polychromatic Plate" session and $325.00 for the "Segmented Bowls".

A $50.00 deposit will be required for registration. A personal check is acceptable for payment.

Coffee, donuts, snacks, cold drinks, and lunch will be provided every day.  All other meals and lodging are the responsibility of the attendee.
Other topics, other classes
Classes can be scheduled for topics other than those scheduled. These would include "Bowl Turning" from solid and burl wood and "Finishing Turned Wood". I am profficient in either. We could easilly spend the entire three (3) days on either of these topics, but they can be combined into a single interesting and informative session.

We can either change the topic for the scheduled classes, or schedule a separate class for these other topics as outlined previously.
Other places
I can schedule either of these or other topics for your AAW Chapter, or a private or group session in your shop. Send me an e-maill at the link and we can discuss content, schedule and cost. I have been giving presentations and demonstrations to woodturners for 10-years, and I will furnish references if you need them.

Class Schedule  (New for 2006)
This year, 2006, I am going to schedule classes to meet the needs of the student, rather than my posting a predetermined class schedule. Here's how it will work. If you are interested in either class, send me a E-mail and we will determine an appropriate 3-days for the class that fits both of our schedules. There will be no restriction on the days of the week.  I will then post that date here, so that others might have an opportunity to attend the same class with you. I will still limit the class to no more than 3, and my preference is 2 students.

There will be two (2) separate classes, one on "Segmented Bowls", and the other on "Polychromatic Plates and Platters". These will be a "hands-on" working session with the goal of everyone in attendance making a project that is similar to that shown as topic project for that session.  I can't guantee that we will always meet that goal, but we will get close. All materials and tools for assembly and turning of the project will be provided.
